In the joint operation carried out by GNR and Polícia Marítima in Albufeira, Portugal's Algarve region, nine people were caught red-handed and detained on suspicion of aiding drug trafficking. During the operation, 100 fuel-filled canisters, as well as a vehicle, drone and mobile phones were seized on the beach.
The operation was carried out near Praia da Falésia.
The suspects are between the ages of 17 and 29
According to the official statement of GNR, the ages of the nine people detained vary between 17 and 29.
Authorities reported that they detained the suspects within the scope of "aiding drug trafficking".
One vehicle, five vehicle registration documents, three keys belonging to different vehicles, a drone and five mobile phones were seized during the operation.
Polícia Marítima seized 100 jerrycans containing fuel from the beach.
Suspicion that the fuel will be used in speedboats
According to the evaluation of the authorities, it is suspected that the large amount of fuel brought to the beach may have been prepared to fuel high-speed boats used in drug smuggling.
The sea routes in the south of the Iberian Peninsula are among the regions closely monitored by security forces, especially in drug smuggling operations between North Africa and Europe.
However, the final decision regarding the guilt of the detained people belongs to the court. After the operation The investigation process continues in coordination with the Ministério Público and the suspects are expected to be brought before the competent judicial authority.
