Less than a year after taking office, Albufeira Mayor Rui Cristina has become the center of political and judicial debates due to different files. While the prosecutor's office is accusing Cristina of discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence due to her remarks against the Roma community, an investigation is also being conducted against some appointments in the municipality. Cristina denies the accusations.
Discussions about Rui Cristina, the Mayor of Albufeira, one of the most important tourism centers of the Algarve, continue.
Cristina, who became the mayor of Chega by winning the 2025 local elections, is facing a judicial process that started especially due to her statements regarding the Roma community.
The Portuguese Prosecutor's Office filed charges of discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence against Rui Cristina in August.
The basis of the file is Cristina's statements during the debate on municipal housing in the Albufeira City Council on November 26, 2025.
While talking about housing investments for the Romani community, Cristina used expressions advocating that taxpayers should be given priority first.
Following the complaint made regarding the statements, an investigation was launched.
In March, Polícia Judiciária conducted a search in Albufeira Municipality as part of the investigation. The process carried out by the prosecutor's office later turned into an official accusation against Cristina.
Cristina does not accept the accusations.
While the mayor argues that his words should be considered within the scope of a political debate, he states that municipal housing should be open to everyone who meets the same criteria, regardless of their origin.
Some appointments in the municipality are also being investigated
The discussions about Rui Cristina are not limited to this file.
According to the news published by Correio da Manhã in June, the Prosecutor's Office is examining all three appointments made by Cristina in the municipality.
One of these names is the mayor's sister, Sara Cristina.
However, there is an important detail here.
According to the municipality's statement, Sara Cristina was not newly hired into the public sector after her older brother became mayor. It is stated that Sara Cristina, who previously worked as a senior technician in the Municipality of Loulé since 2011, was transferred to Albufeira within the scope of the inter-institutional transition mechanism for public employees.
The existence of a prosecutor's investigation does not mean that it is certain that the appointments in question are unlawful.
Contracts worth 239 thousand euros also created controversy
Cristina's management also came to the fore with another financial controversy.
According to the news of Correio da Manhã, based on Sábado, Albufeira Municipality and Albufeira e Olhos de Água regional administration signed contracts worth approximately 239 thousand euros with the company called Palmas aos Palcos.
It was reported that the contracts were linked to the sports, music and urban culture event called Albufeira Radical.
It was reported that the owner of the company, Jorge Costa, helped prepare multimedia content during Rui Cristina's mayoral election campaign and was a supporter of Cristina.
This connection has raised political and ethical questions about the contracts.
However, having question marks about contracts is not the same as having a crime of corruption proven by a judicial decision. There is no decision in the sources examined indicating that Rui Cristina was convicted of corruption due to these contracts.
From PSD to Chega, from Parliament to Albufeira
Born in Loulé in 1979, Rui Cristina initially pursued her political career within the PSD.
In 2024, he left PSD for Chega and was elected as a member of parliament from Évora in the legislative elections held in the same year.
He later became Chega's candidate for mayor of Albufeira in the 2025 local elections.
Cristina won the election and became mayor, thus making Albufeira the first municipality in the Algarve to be governed by Chega.
The first year of Cristina, who promised a change in management and a different approach in the use of public resources when taking office, was controversial due to appointments in the municipal administration, public contracts and the judicial process related to her remarks against the Roma community.
In the future, it will be decisive how the files handled by the Prosecutor's Office will be concluded and how the accusations against Cristina will be evaluated in court.
PTNEWSHUB REVIEW
Since taking office, Rui Cristina's name has frequently been associated with allegations of corruption through controversial appointments and public contracts. However, it is necessary to distinguish between allegations and proven crimes; It would not be correct to describe him as a "corrupt mayor" without a definitive corruption verdict against him. We believe that every question mark arising in the use of public resources should be clarified in a transparent manner.
