The first reaction from the transportation and taxi industry to the fuel support: "It is not enough"

One of the first objections to the 38 million euro sectoral support package announced by the Portuguese government against increasing fuel costs came from the transportation and taxi industry.

ANTRAM and taxi industry representatives argued that the announced support was not sufficient to cover current fuel costs.

What did the government announce?

In the package announced on September 17, a total of 38 million euros were allocated for sectors directly affected by fuel costs.

30 million euros of this will go to the freight transportation and roadside assistance sector.

Support per vehicle will vary between 118.20 euros and 457.80 euros, depending on the gross weight of the vehicle.

While 5 million euros are allocated for road public transportation, a support of 420 euros per bus is envisaged.

The remaining 3 million euros were allocated to taxis, fire departments and the social sector.

The announced amount for taxis is 120 euros per vehicle.

Why is the industry dissatisfied?

ANTRAM and taxi representatives are of the opinion that the announced amounts are not sufficient considering the total cost of the increase in fuel prices on businesses.

Therefore, the amount of support rather than its existence is at the center of the debate.

The government, on the other hand, presents its package as part of broader economic measures and states that it prefers targeted supports that will not disrupt public finances against the rise in fuel prices.

In addition, the temporary ISP discount applied to gasoline and diesel is 31 months old. The bill to extend it until December 2026 was also accepted.

The debate will continue

Transportation costs do not only concern sector companies.

Rising fuel costs increase logistics costs and may be reflected in product prices and service fees over time.

For this reason, whether sector representatives will request additional measures from the government and how the announced supports will be implemented will be closely monitored in the coming days.
