This guide provides general information; it is not legal advice or an official decision about your personal case. Rules, portal screens and procedures may change. Before applying, paying or travelling, verify the information against current official sources and, where needed, seek advice from the competent authority or a qualified legal professional. PT News Hub takes care over accuracy but does not guarantee suitability for every individual case, completeness or the outcome of a procedure. This notice does not override rights or responsibilities arising under mandatory applicable law.
Identify the stage that is blocked
Payment, examination and card delivery are separate milestones. Is the problem login, no DUC, payment not reflected, document upload or waiting for a card? Naming the exact stage makes a request for help much clearer.
Correct procedure
Initial residence, renewal, corrections and family reunification differ.
Correct portal
Compare the address used with the official notification.
Last completed step
Saving is not submitting; generating a DUC is not paying it.
Evidence folder
Keep the date, reference, error and last successful screen.
Our general AIMA guide covers the wider process. This page helps identify a blocked renewal step and organise the next check.
Which portal and permit category?
Check portal availability on the day you apply against your permit category and expiry date. Do not assume every category uses the same screen or procedure. Official renewal portal · ARI category instructions
| Situation | First check | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary renewal | Portal de Renovações | Every expiry date and category is open. |
| Older file | The file/platform in the official notification | A new application transfers the old one automatically. |
| ARI | Current category instructions | Initial-application steps are identical to renewal. |
| First permit / family reunification | The relevant AIMA service page | The renewal button replaces all procedures. |
An expiry date alone does not establish eligibility. Card type and the existing file matter together. Our renewal check tool organises your starting information; it does not decide a case for AIMA.
Login, verification codes and email
Check the address bar and open the official portal directly. Look in spam, old mailboxes and filters for verification messages. Repeated requests can make it unclear which code is the latest; follow the screen instructions.
- Record the portal address and error time.
- Try once in another up-to-date browser and note the result.
- If the email record is wrong/outdated, prepare the relevant screen.
- Distinguish a wrong recorded address from losing access to a correct mailbox.
AIMA’s record-correction instructions direct renewal-email corrections to the renewal category in the official contact form. AIMA record-correction instructions
NIF, NISS, address and debt checks
A debt-check message does not by itself prove that you owe money. An actual debt, an identifying-record mismatch and an unfinished administrative check are different possibilities. Compare records rather than trying to bypass the message.
- Check that a NIF has not been entered where a NISS belongs, or vice versa.
- Compare name, passport number and birth date.
- Check addresses separately at AIMA, Finanças and Social Security.
- Keep the date and reference of any correction.
The tax document is Certidão de dívida e não dívida; the Social Security document is Declaração de situação contributiva. They come from different bodies and are not the same as a balance screenshot. Tax authority explanation · Social Security guide
Read the certificate’s wording and date. A regularised tax position does not always mean that no amount remains outstanding: authorised instalment arrangements can also qualify. If AIMA requests evidence, respond to that request; do not assume every file needs the same unsolicited uploads.
For address corrections, AIMA’s FAQ recommends confirming the updated record before proceeding with renewal/payment. AIMA FAQ, pp. 23–25
No DUC or an expired payment document
A DUC is the collection document associated with a fee. A document never generated is different from one whose payment period has ended. Check its applicant, procedure, amount and reference; do not use someone else’s payment details.
AIMA advises checking eligibility first, then reporting a continuing issue to geral@aima.gov.pt. Open the official DUC instructions for its prescribed email subject. AIMA FAQ, p. 27
- Never generated: prepare the error and file reference.
- Generated: read the date and payment instructions.
- Period ended: seek clarification on a replacement/correct procedure before trying the old reference.
- Unexpected amount: check the application type instead of paying an arbitrary fraction.
No flat renewal fee is prescribed here. Use the official DUC generated for your procedure under the current tariff.
Paid but the portal is still awaiting payment
A bank transaction does not alone prove that the payment has been matched to the correct application. Before paying the full fee again, compare the bank receipt’s date, amount, reference and result with the DUC.
| Check | Keep |
|---|---|
| Payment completed? | Bank status/receipt |
| Correct amount? | DUC and amount paid |
| Same reference? | DUC and payment reference |
| Portal status? | Dated screen and error |
This page does not promise a universal update time. If an official notification specifies one, retain it. When records conflict, ask explicitly for the payment to be checked against the application: identify the DUC, payment date and remaining screen status.
A bank receipt is not a decision or a residence card. Keep any application document issued by the portal separately and follow official notifications for the outcome of your file.
When payment really was incomplete
For partial payments on applications started through Portal de Renovações only, AIMA’s FAQ says to pay the missing amount using the same DUC through a different bank from the first payment, avoiding CTT/Payshop. AIMA FAQ, p. 28
Keep the first and additional receipts together; check their total against the official DUC. Do not automatically transfer this instruction to a different AIMA platform.
Uploads and missing-document requests
Save your own on-screen document list. Someone else’s D7, student or ARI file is not your renewal checklist. Evidence should be readable, concern the relevant person and cover the period requested.
- Prepare identification/passport pages to the extent requested.
- Read the current format/size instructions; do not borrow a limit from another portal.
- Open each PDF and check for missing, rotated or password-protected pages.
- Use clear names;
01-passport.pdfis our filing suggestion. - Distinguish upload progress from final submission confirmation; retain the confirmation.
Record any deadline in a missing-document request. If the wording is ambiguous, identify what is unclear and ask for clarification. A long message does not replace the document requested. If time is an issue, seek case-specific clarification/legal assistance; this guide does not extend a deadline.
Receipt, biometrics and waiting for a card
Keep the bank receipt, portal application receipt, AIMA notification and card delivery as separate records. One does not prove the others are completed. Before opening another account/file for the same procedure, seek clarification using existing references.
AIMA’s ARI instructions explain that applicants may be notified to provide biometrics when needed. Follow the instructions for your own permit category and any notification about your file. An online application does not guarantee completion without an appointment. AIMA ARI instructions
Check the recipient and delivery address; follow any actual delivery notification. Our card-status guide covers that stage. Do not interpret an unclear technical status as approval.
A clear support request and Portuguese template
Choose the relevant issue in the official contact form. Menus may change; the structure below is a writing aid, not a promise of identical categories on every screen. AIMA record-correction instructions
- Name and reference needed to locate the file
- Portal and blocked stage
- First error date, last successful step and corrections made
- Relevant DUC/receipt/notification
- One request: correct a record, match a payment or clarify status

Assunto: Pedido de esclarecimento — renovação de autorização de residência Exmos. Senhores, No processo [número], iniciado em [portal/data], encontro a seguinte dificuldade: [descrição]. A última etapa concluída foi [etapa]. O portal apresenta [mensagem] desde [data]. Solicito esclarecimento sobre [pedido concreto]. Junto [documentos relevantes]. Remove unrelated bank transactions and other people’s details. Submit identity information requested by AIMA only through an official channel. Keep the submission record and use the same reference when following up.
Following up and avoiding scams
Maintain a timeline of dates, channels, references, attachments, questions and answers. A follow-up should give the previous reference and new development. Time passing is not, by itself, a reason to create a new application or pay another fee.
Explain concrete consequences such as employment problems, a dated notification, family circumstances or upcoming travel with evidence. Different delays may require different legal responses. For a refusal, appeal deadline or serious risk to rights, obtain individual legal assistance. No automatic approval or guaranteed outcome/time is promised here.
Before paying anyone selling appointments, fast cards or guaranteed results, establish who supplies which service. A government fee differs from a representative’s fee. An apparent email address alone does not authenticate a message or requested bank account.
Final checklist
- Correct procedure and portal.
- Current coverage and expiry date checked.
- Email, NIF/NISS and addresses compared.
- DUC and bank evidence matched.
- Partial payment distinguished from delayed matching.
- Documents and any deadline recorded.
- Error, reference and date retained.
- Readable, relevant attachments; no passwords/codes.
- One clear support request.
- Submission record and follow-up reference saved.
The list does not guarantee approval. It helps make the blocked stage understandable and traceable.
Frequently asked questions
I paid: is the application finished?
Payment, examination and delivery are separate stages.
Does a debt check prove I owe money?
Not by itself; compare institutional evidence and identifying records.
Should I pay again?
Verify the first transaction and matching before paying the full fee twice.
Will another browser speed things up?
It can isolate access/display trouble, not accelerate administrative examination.
Can an online application require biometrics?
AIMA can send a personal appointment notification if needed.
Is the receipt enough for travel?
It is not a travel document. Check your status and route separately.
