Autumn Weather in Mid-August: Rain and High Winds Come to Portugal

After days of struggling with the heat of summer, the sky is suddenly preparing to change course to autumn. Especially after the orange heat warning given to nine regions in the past few days, the coolness we have all been waiting for is on the doorstep; But this time it looks like it will be a little noisy and windy.

The low pressure system, which approaches the mainland from the Atlantic and has a very unusual structure for the season, will completely change the weather starting from the weekend.

The Weather Is Changing As of Sunday

The Portuguese Meteorological Institute (IPMA) states that this system, filtering from the north of the Azores, has a truly autumnal character. We may start to feel its effects starting from Saturday night, but the real breaking point will happen on Sunday.

It is estimated that the rains, which are expected to last until the beginning of the week, will be heavy in places, especially in the northern and central parts. While rain and wind are affecting the coastline from Viana do Castelo to Sagres, the wind speed is expected to reach 60 to 80 kilometers per hour in the interior and mountainous areas.

Attention to Those Going to the Sea and Those on the Shore: Waves May Exceed 5 Meters

The real warning for those making weekend plans comes from the sea side. It is predicted that the wave height may reach up to 5.5 meters on the Atlantic coast with stormy winds. Therefore, it is useful to be extra cautious during beach walks or boating/fishing plans.

Although the thermometers may temporarily move a few degrees on Friday and Saturday, that sweltering weather will give way to a cool and rainy breath on Sunday. IPMA continues to monitor the progress of the system in real time; So, there may be minor changes in the route, but it is useful to be prepared for cloudy weather and raincoats.
