Carneiro Defends 2027 State Budget Amid Domestic and Global Crises
Speaking at a press briefing in Valongo, PS leader José Luís Carneiro warned that rejecting the Orçamento do Estado 2027 would trigger a political crisis that would exacerbate the already severe cost‑of‑living pressures faced by Portuguese families, including soaring food, fuel, electricity and gas prices.
He highlighted a broader context of uncertainty, citing a looming war on Europe’s doorstep, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and political turmoil in Spain, France, Germany, the United States and Brazil, all of which he said could amplify economic challenges for Portugal.
Although he described the government’s proposal as a ‘poor budget’, Carneiro stressed that parliament’s duty is to protect Portugal and that the budget must contain measures to address vital needs such as housing, energy and food security.
Opposition parties argue the budget falls short and call for deeper reforms, but Carneiro’s remarks are likely to influence how the opposition approaches the upcoming vote, with the outcome seen as pivotal to avoiding a potential 2026 political crisis.
