Healthcare Fraud Crackdown: Prosecutor General and Medical Association Sign Joint Accord

Portugal's Attorney General's Office (PGR) and the National Medical Association signed a landmark protocol to streamline the prosecution of SNS financial fraud, counterfeit prescription schemes, and physical assaults against healthcare staff.
The bilateral agreement establishes an accelerated referral mechanism between clinical auditing bodies and specialized fraud prosecutors. Investigations into fraudulent pharmacy reimbursements and fabricated clinical entries will now bypass bureaucratic delays to protect public health funding allocations.
Crucially, the accord also prioritizes criminal complaints involving verbal and physical violence against hospital doctors and nursing teams. Cases will be fast-tracked through local district courts, ensuring swift judicial consequences for disruptive or aggressive behavior within emergency facilities.
This report was compiled and verified using official statements from the PGR and the Portuguese Medical Association.
