Government Approves Flood Prevention and Waste Infrastructure Overhaul for Faro

Portugal's Minister for Environment and Energy, Maria da Graça Carvalho, visited Faro today to guarantee national support for upgrading the Algarve capital's drainage and waste management networks. The intervention aims to permanently resolve recurrent urban flooding caused by severe seasonal storms and tidal surges.
The multi-million-euro package includes high-capacity stormwater collectors and modernized retention channels discharging into the Ria Formosa barrier lagoon without endangering delicate coastal ecosystems.
Carvalho emphasized that advanced sorting and waste management facilities will prevent urban runoff from polluting maritime reserves during heavy rainfall events.
A formal financing agreement between the Ministry and Faro Municipality was signed today, with procurement tenders scheduled before year-end.
Local business owners and residents welcomed the long-overdue infrastructure upgrades, which will safeguard the downtown historic district during winter weather peaks.
