In a bid to relieve mounting strain on primary healthcare centers, Portugal's National Health Service (SNS) launched a nationwide referral collaboration with community pharmacies today. Under the new clinical protocol, certified pharmacists can directly refer non-urgent patients to hospital consultations and specialized testing.

Integrating pharmacy triage with the central SNS 24 digital platform allows qualified pharmacists to schedule appointments and diagnostic assessments for patients lacking dedicated family doctors.

Health authorities expect this pathway to divert thousands of non-emergency visits away from overburdened hospital emergency rooms each month.

The Pharmaceutical Society hailed the reform as an overdue modernization of community healthcare delivery, noting that pharmacy proximity guarantees swift triage.

The pilot initiative rolls out across the Lisbon and Porto metropolitan zones before nationwide integration by the end of this year.
