Rossio detainees summoned for next legal step on 27 October

The 55 people detained when police cleared Lisbon’s Rossio housing encampment have been summoned to appear before prosecutors on 27 October. The postponement of proceedings scheduled for 21 October does not amount to a conviction or a renewed detention order.
After the police operation on the morning of 20 October, those detained were formally designated as suspects, or arguidos, and released. They remain subject to identity-and-residence undertakings requiring compliance with lawful summonses.
Notícias ao Minuto reported that 25 people attended the morning court session on 21 October. The new date announced for the group of 55 is 27 October.
The Prosecutor-General’s Office told ECO that cases could proceed to summary trial or, where legal requirements and agreement are met, provisional suspension of proceedings. Neither route has been announced as a collective outcome for everyone involved.
The arrests followed the removal of the encampment in Praça D. Pedro IV, commonly known as Rossio. The next scheduled step is the individual assessment of how each case should proceed.
Police figures reported by ECO place the start of the 20 October operation at about 5.45 a.m., with 228 tents and structures removed. The PSP cited unauthorised occupation of public space and resistance to police orders; disobedience is among the suspected offences under consideration.
A camp spokesperson announced the new date for the group after the 21 October proceedings. Relatives and supporters gathered outside court. Their housing demands and objections to the police operation remain part of a wider public dispute alongside the individual legal cases.
