Portugal has been named Europe's Leading Destination in the 2026 European edition of the World Travel Awards. The awards were presented on Saturday evening, 17 October, at a ceremony in Montenegro's Kotor Bay, with the results reported the following day.

Different regions recognised in different categories

According to the organiser, Algarve received the European beach destination title and the Azores the regional adventure tourism destination award. Lisbon was recognised in the city destination category, while Dark Sky Alqueva received the tourist attraction title. The results highlight different travel interests alongside the national destination award.

European results are separate from the world final

These are the results of the European stage; they do not mean Portugal has simultaneously won the global destination title. Tourism businesses gain a new recognition to reference in promotion. For travellers, however, the awards are category results from a tourism competition, rather than an announcement of changes to prices, availability or individual businesses' service conditions.
