First Since 1912: Countdown Begins for Total Solar Eclipse in Portugal

There is very little time left for that big celestial event we will experience on Wednesday, and the excitement is obviously increasing. Business is especially busy on the Bragança side in the northeast; hotels are already fully booked. People flock to the area not to miss this rare moment.

Preparations and Measures in the Region

On the other side of the border, in Spain, the situation is a little more tense. Authorities are concerned that the crowds that will gather in rural areas will increase the risk of a possible forest fire. Of course, similar measures were taken on our side. As a precaution against the risk of forest fire, crowds planning to watch from certain points in Montesinho Natural Park are safely directed to the municipal airport.

Weather and Observation Conditions

The latest predictions shared by IPMA (National Meteorological Institute) made us smile. It looks like the weather will be largely clear or partly cloudy across the country on Wednesday afternoon. So we are very lucky in terms of visibility.

The retention rate across the country will vary between 92% and 100%. The main event is that it is the first total solar eclipse to be seen in Portugal since 1912. One hundred percent full coverage will only be experienced in the Montesinho Natural Park in the Trás-os-Montes region; The rest can be watched partially. Unfortunately, our next chance will be in 2144, so this Wednesday really can't be missed.

When and How to Watch?

This gigantic shadow play can be watched along a line including the North Pole, Greenland, Iceland and Spain. As the Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth, the light will decrease and it will be almost night for about 26 seconds in that narrow area on the total eclipse line.

They have been shouting loudly on the screens and in the news for days; Never look at the eclipse with your naked eye without special sunglasses. Glasses have become very scarce in pharmacies and many have even sold out. If you do not have pre-purchased glasses, it is better to avoid any last minute surprises.
